The formation of the canoe begins by placing the bark on a platform with holes to accommodate the vertical stakes. The tapered shape on either end creates the canoe shape. Rocks are placed on flat pieces of board on the bottom and the sides are curled up along the stakes. A bowed rail or 'gunwale' (gunnal) marks the top of the canoe. Two pieces of wood serve as a clamp and are attached between and at some of the stakes to hold the bark in position. |
