Only after careful testing of the bark is a birch tree found acceptable to be used for a canoe.  The length and circumference of this tree will produce a canoe of about 14 feet and 2 feet wide with a single sheet.  Not all birches will produce bark that will peel from the tree in one sheet.  The builder is confident this bark will work nicely so he begins the task of scoring the length of the tree with his saw.
